Good afternoon, and welcome to England. We hope that your visit here will be a pleasant one. Today, I would like to draw your attention to a few of our laws.

The first one is about drinking. Now, you may not buy wines in this country if you are under 18 years of age.

Secondly, noise. Enjoy yourselves by all means, but please don't make noise, particularly at night.

Thirdly, crossing the road. Be careful. The traffic moves on the left side of the road in this country. Use the crossings for walking and do not take any chances when crossing the road.

Finally, smoking. It is against the law to buy cigarettes if you are under 16 years of age.

In both body and mind, children are different from adults because they are at a different stage of development. As far as the body is concerned, it's obvious (明显的). A body of six months can sit up, but not run and so on. But their development of the mind is not so obvious. A small child, for example, does not understand the difference between the present and the future. So if a child asks for a biscuit, and the parent says "No, not now, dear. You can have one after lunch." The child often cries, and perhaps he is just being different. He does not understand the idea of the future, and for him, not now means never, so naturally the child protests.

10.Why are children different from adults?

They are at a different stage of development.

  They are at different places.

  They are educated differently.

11.When can a child sit up?

M: What do you think of these skirts, Jane?

M: But in the last store, you liked the style and didn't like the prices.

W: I know. I hoped to find something on sale... Look! Here's a nice one. It isn't expensive, and I like the style. It's fashionable (时髦的,高级的). I think it will be comfortable, too.

M: Why don't you try it on?

W: I will. If it fits me, I'll take it.

12.How does Jane like the skirts?

She likes neither the prices nor the styles.

She likes the prices but does not like the styles.

M: Of course, Julia. Sit down. What is it?

  W: I've decided to leave.

  M: Leave?

  W: Yes.

M: Oh, no. Is it because we're moving out of London?

W: Well, yes. But there are other reasons.

M: I see. You never liked working here.

W: No, no. I've enjoyed working here. But...

  M: But what?

W: Well, I haven't time for other things. I've worked here for four years. And I'd like to do something different.

M: What do you mean, something different?

W: I want to travel. You know, I have never been to other countries.

  M: Haven't you?

  W: Thank you, Tom.

17.Tom is most likely Julia's .
